- Social Media & Open Source Intelligence Monitoring
What information does your online presence disclose?Determining a client's social media and online footprint exposes a vast amount of personal, private and corporate information available to the public. We also research what others are posting concerning our client - direct/indirect threats, plans to initiate contact, sightings, etc. All of this is included in "social intelligence" (SOCINT).
Social media sites open up numerous opportunities for online vulnerabilities because of the vast amount of useful information located in one place. For example, you can get a great deal of personal information about any person worldwide by just checking their Facebook page, Linked In profile, Instagram handle, or reading through their Twitter tweets. Such information often includes the person of interest's connections, political views, religion, ethnicity, country of origin, personal photos and videos, spouse's name (or marital status), home and work addresses, frequently visited locations, social activities, work history, education, important event dates (such as birth date, graduation date, anniversary, or the date when started a new job), and lastly all their social interactions.
Most certainly. Although tactics and technology are always changing, this space has benefitted a lot over the last few years with open source intelligence (OSINT) collection and analysis.
To paraphrase a former US President, "The bad guys only have to get it right once." One of the major problems with OSINT is that the prevalence of the Internet has enabled a global army of trolls and keyboard warriors - who never have to show up anywhere in-person and yet can cause varying degrees of tumult and fear. The challenge in the OSINT realm is that the absence or presence of an actual threat is not indicative at all of the degree of risk. While the identification of a threat should cause you and your team to be 'more' situationally aware (if a real threat actor is identified), you are far better served by always being in the 'when/ then' mindset as you approach special events. Having a close protection operator (or team) to do their job and protect and support you when something happens is far more valuable than hiring someone after an incident occurs.
We're constantly looking for individuals with character and morals. In my experience of over 15 years in personal security and 20 years in law enforcement, those traits are much more valuable than a specific pedigree.
If you hire us to deploy a team to support you and your family, yes! Absolutely. In our relationship building phase, we'll frame out your expectations as we share our capabilities. Somewhere in the middle, we'll align requirements and create a plan that you understand and agree with.
Rather than have our clients over-react and completely delete their entire online profile, we'd rather keep them watchful over what they post. Implementing a moritorium on specific location posts, or limiting photos of expensive items can be a simple step to lowering their exposure.
