Determining a client's social media and online footprint exposes a vast amount of personal, private and corporate information available to the public. We also research what others are posting concerning our client - direct/indirect threats, plans to initiate contact, sightings, etc. All of this is included in "social intelligence" (SOCINT).

Social media sites open up numerous opportunities for online vulnerabilities because of the vast amount of useful information located in one place. For example, you can get a great deal of personal information about any person worldwide by just checking their Facebook page, Linked In profile, Instagram handle, or reading through their Twitter tweets. Such information often includes the person of interest's connections, political views, religion, ethnicity, country of origin, personal photos and videos, spouse's name (or marital status), home and work addresses, frequently visited locations, social activities, work history, education, important event dates (such as birth date, graduation date, anniversary, or the date when started a new job), and lastly all their social interactions.

Most certainly. Although tactics and technology are always changing, this space has benefitted a lot over the last few years with open source intelligence (OSINT) collection and analysis.

Rather than have our clients over-react and completely delete their entire online profile, we'd rather keep them watchful over what they post. Implementing a moritorium on specific location posts, or limiting photos of expensive items can be a simple step to lowering their exposure.
